Do you need a legal or standard paternity test?

DNA and paternity tests are typically taken to answer important questions about biological relationships. They are often taken to:

  1. Provide peace of mind and satisfy curiosity, and/or
  2. Use as evidence in legal cases such as child support and others (see below).

These two purposes require the same high quality DNA testing services, but they have different requirements for DNA sample collection.

Standard Test:

You can collect the DNA test samples in the comfort of your own home with peace of mind or curiosity in-home maternity tests. The results of such testing are of the highest quality, but because we cannot verify the origin of each of the DNA test samples, standard paternity tests may not be admissible in court.

Legally Admissible Test:

paternity test results can be used for many different legal purposes, including child support and child custody cases, estate and inheritance determination, and immigration and adoption. To ensure that the DNA test results are legally defensible, you must undergo legal paternity testing through which chain of custody is maintained. The legal DNA test is the same high quality DNA test as the in-home paternity test, but all of the samples must be collected by a neutral third party, never by you or another tested party.

Sample Collection Instructions (for Parents):

You will receive a DNA sample collection kit that contains swabs and envelopes that you can use to mail your samples back to us. This kit contains detailed instructions for sample collection and shipping. To collect a person’s DNA sample, simply rub the swab against the inside cheek. Send the samples to our laboratory—we will extract DNA from these cell samples and run the DNA paternity test.

Prenatal Sample Collection Instructions (performed by OBGYN):

You may need to pay a separate physician’s fee for prenatal sampling.  If the mother is having the CVS or amniocentesis sample collected for medical purposes (in addition to paternity), her insurance company may cover this fee.  Please note that the collection of this sample is not included in the cost of this test.
